Bio
Jesse Locke (he/him) is a writer and musician based in the traditional, unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, also known as Vancouver, BC.
As a journalist, his writing has been published by outlets including Pitchfork, Bandcamp Daily, SPIN, Stereogum, Paste, Premier Guitar, The Ringer, CBC Music, The Wire, Xtra, Pink Ticket Travel, Musicworks, FLOOD, Tone Glow, Aquarium Drunkard, and Exclaim!
Jesse has written liner notes and artist biographies for labels such as Joyful Noise, Fat Possum, In The Red, Mint, Royal Mountain, Dine Alone, Telephone Explosion, and Lion Productions. His first book, Heavy Metalloid Music: The Story of Simply Saucer, was published in 2016 by Eternal Cavalier Press.
As a musician, Jesse has played with bands such as Tough Age, Big Rig, Motorists, Simply Saucer, Kerkland Jerks, Rotten Column, Century Palm, the Ketamines, Dirty Beaches, and cult NYC post-punk pre-teen Chandra Oppenheim. In 2020, Jesse and Chandra co-founded the We Are Time record label, releasing music for Motorists, Tough Age, MISZCZYK, Empanadas Ilegales, New Chance, Bile Sister, Body Breaks, and many others.
Jesse has toured Europe, Japan, the United States, and Canada. Recent highlights include Chandra’s 2019 performance at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival, Chandra's live 7” released by Third Man Records, and Tough Age's 2023 album, Waiting Here, released by We Are Time and Bobo Integral Records.
Jesse lives with his partner Reagan and their 14-year-old cat Crumbs.
