Bio
The Papercup Records family comprises more than 25 artists. Imagine the label as a tree growing out of a paper cup. It turns a disposable product into a sustainable foundation, the perfect metaphor for a DIY company. A family tree with branches bearing fruit that appeals to different tastes. The tribe that everyone would like to have because they are loved for their quirks. The label is not limited to any musical genre, not locked into one style. Diversity is what makes the Papercup Records sound. Crossbreeds. Intersections. Unique acts attract the most colorful birds with tunes that linger. The artists also hop from branch to branch. Many connect in a microcosmic friendship, cross-fertilizing their skills, beats, and performances. They appreciate, respect, and support each other.
Papercup Records was just an idea at first. Timid Tiger’s album ‘The Streets Are Black’ was released on a newly founded sub-label via Buback, Hamburg. But Keshavara’s first single in 2016 planted the seed. Since then, label owners Keshav Purushotham and Steffen Wilmking, aka Steddy, have nurtured what has flourished without ever having an idea of what it would turn out to be. Even in the face of 3-4 releases a week, they are still surprised by the glamorous rustling of guitars in the wind, a tendril-like surface on mossy bass, or a melodic chorus that spontaneously takes root. Diversification is a signature move. Bedroom songwriting. Future hip hop. Ghost pop. Neo-Indie. Modern soul.
The label's history goes back to its founders' years of experience and times together in the pop business. One is a musician, composer, lyricist, producer, and DJ. The other is a producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and mixing and mastering engineer. Their skills merged seamlessly, which is how Papercup Records naturally sprouted. Let's call it a Biotope. Or a Home of Sweet, Sweet Music. It's magical, just like the tree growing from the paper cup.
