THISMUSTBETHETRACK is an independent music platform built on selection rather than volume. Every piece of music featured is personally chosen, with the same approach I have brought to record collecting, label work, music buying and DJing for many years: the music has to be exceptional. My background spans several sides of independent music culture. I was a record buyer and Distribution Manager at Halcyon in Brooklyn, where I also curated rare and collectible records, and I run the independent label Releisure, with a catalog that includes releases from Baltra, Keita Sano, Intergalactic Faerie Funk, Paradiso Rhythm, KNLB, CBDJ and others. As a DJ and curator, my work has always revolved around discovering music with character rather than following a prescribed genre or trend. THISMUSTBETHETRACK is the editorial expression of that experience. The channel has grown organically to approximately 5,000 subscribers, with close to 1,000 individually selected releases spanning both important music from the past and exceptional contemporary work. For artists I select through Groover, the principal opportunity is a dedicated feature on THISMUSTBETHETRACK. I do not treat accepted music as disposable content or temporary playlist inventory. A track is selected because I believe it deserves to sit within the editorial identity of the channel and to be presented directly to an audience built around music discovery. For exceptional artists, there is also the possibility of a deeper conversation through Releisure. The label is deliberately small and selective; I am not looking to build a large roster. I am interested in artists whose work has enough identity to justify a genuine relationship and, when the right project appears, potentially a release. My musical interests are intentionally broad: jazz, fusion, funk, soul, disco, boogie, library music, house, techno, electro and experimental electronic music, as well as music that sits convincingly between established categories. Genre alone does not determine whether I will support something. Taste, originality, musicianship, production, atmosphere and identity do. I am especially interested in artists who understand musical history without simply reproducing it, and in records that reveal something beyond the first listen. I have little interest in formulaic productions, obvious trend imitation or music designed primarily to satisfy an algorithm. Selection is highly editorial. A submission does not guarantee coverage, and I would rather feature very little excellent music than dilute the identity of the platform by accepting material simply to maintain output. Ultimately, what I offer is not simply another placement. It is considered endorsement from a curator, collector and label owner whose work has been built around one thing: recognizing music worth paying attention to.
